NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) is an annual celebration in Australia that honours the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year it will be from 2nd July to 9th of July.
NAIDOC plays a crucial role in promoting respect, recognition, and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their cultures, and their ongoing contributions to Australian society. It serves as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging and valuing the histories, perspectives, and rights of Indigenous Australians.
As an ally here are a few thing you can do this NAIDOC:
-
Educate Yourself: Take the initiative to learn about the histories, cultures, and issues faced by Indigenous peoples. There are many events run in Vic and be sure to checkout the Koorie Heritage Trust.
-
Listen and Amplify Indigenous Voices: Create space for Indigenous voices to be heard and uplifted. Share and promote Indigenous-led initiatives, art, literature, and activism on social media or other platforms.Through our Indigenous art codeendorsement we ensure that we operate ethically. Are royalties paid? Where was this made? How much input does the artist have? These are questions you need to ask.
-
Respect and Honour Indigenous Sovereignty
-
Challenge Stereotypes and Biases: Be aware of your own biases and prejudices, and actively challenge stereotypes or misconceptions about Indigenous peoples.
-
Support Indigenous-led Initiatives: Advocate for and support Indigenous-led organisations, initiatives, and businesses. We love working with charitable organisations such as Healing Foundation
-
Take Action: Engage in meaningful action to support Indigenous rights and well-being. Make small but conscious decisions about how you interact and how you buy.
Through our collaborations with our artists, Melanie Have and Chern'ee Sutton we bring to light not only their art but their history and storytelling. We are proud to be one of the the very few brands that do so ethically and remain Australian Made.
